OPERATING POLICIES for Caregivers
Little Leaders is licensed under the Ministry of Education and follows all policies of the Child Care and Early Years Act as well as Little Leaders Operating Policies listed below:
Little Leaders promotes a nut-free environment. Proper nutrition is essential to children's healthy development therefore LLD also ensures:
a) caregivers must be conscious of any existing food allergies of the children in their care, and are not permitted to serve nut products and any other foods that are known allergens. Where possible, caregivers should avoid foods that have a high risk of allergic reaction (ie. shellfish, eggs, honey, etc.)
b) in accordance with the CCEYA, a menu plan or daily log of foods served in the daycare must be available for a parent or authorized representative to review. All meals and snacks must be in accordance with Canada's Food Guide.
c) children must be served a morning snack, lunch and an afternoon snack. Breakfast or dinner are not included in a standard daycare day but may be arranged in special circumstances. Caregivers providing Before-and-After School care are only required to provide a nutritious snack after school.
ILLNESS AND INJURY
a) the caregiver will refer to the Emergency Contact form provided to contact a parent/guardian/other in the case of illness or injury
b) a child may not enter/remain in daycare if the child is vomiting or has diarrhea, or a fever over 101F.
c) a school-age child that is deemed too sick to attend school is not permitted
to enter a full-day daycare program.
In accordance with the CCEYA and LLD, the daycare environment must be safe and stimulating. As a minimum, the daycare space should meet the following requirements:
a) meet all safety requirements, including keeping dangerous objects/products out of reach of children, and keeping the area secure,
b) make sure toys and supplies that are age-appropriate are accessible.
c) ensure the area is free of clutter for safety and developmental reasons,
d) ensure TV viewing is limited to two 30-minute segments per day,
e) employ the environment as a 'third teacher' by displaying and posting learning materials and playing appropriate music.
SAFE OUTDOOR TIME
The CCEYA specifies that children are required to have 2 hours of outdoor time per day. Exceptions to this rule apply when:
a) lightning, torrential rains, or winds above 25km/hr
b) weather conditions are deemed to be unsafe due to, but not exclusive to, extreme temperature (above 30C on the humidex or below -5C with windchill factor)
c) a parent's request for a temporary suspension (maximum 2 days) of outdoor exposure due to a child's condition/illness
d) media warnings to stay indoors for any reason.
Due to the high volume of provider vacations in our short summer months of July and August, it presents a challenge to us to ensure there is adequate back-up for all parents that require it. Therefore we ask that you book your summer vacation with us by June 1 at the latest.
DAYS AND HOURS OF OPERATION
The days and hours of childcare required by each family is set out on the enrolment paperwork, of which the provider receives a copy. Should the parent request a change to these days or hours, two weeks' notice is required. If the parent requires longer hours than stipulated, the caregiver is permitted to charge overtime fees. If you plan to charge for overtime, please advise the parent up-front so this does not become a source of conflict later. Early Pick-up Requested: If you request parents to pick up more than one hour earlier than their pre-arranged time, you will be paid half-day only. If, due to your request for an earlier pick-up, the parent chooses to not bring their child on that day, it will be deemed that you are not available to provide the service according to contract and will not be paid for the day.
The following practices are strictly prohibited at Little Leaders:
(a) corporal punishment of the child;
(b) physical restraint of the child, such as confining the child to a high chair, car seat, stroller or other device for the purposes of discipline or in lieu of supervision, unless the physical restraint is for the purpose of preventing a child from hurting himself, herself or someone else, and is used only as a last resort and only until the risk of injury is no longer imminent;
(c) locking the exits of the child care centre or home child care premises for the purpose of confining the child, or confining the child in an area or room without adult supervision, unless such confinement occurs during an emergency and is required as part of the licensee’s emergency management policies and procedures;
(d) use of harsh or degrading measures or threats or use of derogatory language directed at or used in the presence of a child that would humiliate, shame or frighten the child or undermine his or her self-respect, dignity or self-worth;
(e) depriving the child of basic needs including food, drink, shelter, sleep, toilet use, clothing or bedding; or
(f) inflicting any bodily harm on children including making children eat or drink against their will. O. Reg. 126/16, s. 34.
Occasionally differences of opinions occur between a provider and parent. To find resolution, it is recommended that the parent and caregiver find a time/place away from children to discuss the issue thoroughly. This involves listening openly and trying to understand each other’s perspective. If an amicable solution has not been reached, a Little Leaders representative will be called in to offer an unbiased perspective in an attempt to mediate.
